RARE UNDERPAID CARTIER 10d BLUE COVER EX TORONTO WITH "MORE to PAY" MARK, ETC.; Attractive 15 May 1859 env. (some edge wear) from Toronto (fair cds on front) to Edinburgh with a single 1855 Cartier 10d Blue franking (outer frame touched/into at top left/right only, otherwise 4m; huge at foot); the stamp is blessedly lightly tied by a Toronto barred diamond (which also ties the stamp by clear indentation). The letter was above the half ounce limit and so was underpaid by 8d and so it was marked "11[d]" in Toronto (8d deficient postage + 3d half fine to be claimed from GB); on arrival in GB v. fine 30 May "LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET" cds on reverse) the full "1/2" postage due charge was applied (8d deficient + 6d fine) of which the British PO kept 3d. A spectacular usage; only one other underpaid 1855 Cartier 10d cover has been recorded. Exhibition Item. [Brandon cert. (1978)] [Illustrated in FTM; p.57.] Cross Reference: TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS, LANCASHIRE - LIVERPOOL, CANADA (Image)

UNIQUE(?) UNDERPAID 1s-6d RATE COVER (1859 6d x3) WITH ORIGINAL ENCLOSED PHOTOGRAPHS OF SENDERS; 28 Oct. 1862 env. (understandable minor edge wear) from "SOUTH-CAYUGA/U.C" (partly fine cds on front) to Suffolk with 1859 6d Green (vertical pair + single) all cancelled by three m/s lines (as usual for this PO at this period; see next lot), but then endorsed "Over 1oz" in transit in Canada and so having a partly fine "MORE-TO-PAY" mark (Hamilton?) on the front with m/s "9d" (6d deficient + half 6d fine). This was changed (on the Allan Line S.S. 'North American' en route) to a handstruck "1/-" (v. fine), and there is a 14 Nov. "IPSWICH" backstamp. The reason for the extra weight in the letter is clear because it entire contents are still present; twin letters (on a single sheet) from the addressee's cousins (Robert & Eliza Cook) along with metallic-framed original photographs of each of them; the photos tipped the weight above the half ounce limit. The contents (full typed transcript included) include; "...I wish we could come and thank you in person and see you and Charles... but as that is denied us, vanity prompted us to think that our likenesses would be acceptable; so I hope you will think them worth having...". One hopes that the addressee was happy to pay a shilling postage due for the photos of her cousins! Probably a Unique survival of such early photographs of pioneer Canadians in the original envelope that they were sent to England in 1862. Spectacular and Important Exhibition Page! [See next lot for the rest of this correspondence.] [Illustrated in FTM; p.80.] Cross Reference: PHOTOGRAPHS, POSTAGE DUE STAMPS & COVERS, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL (Image)

RARE "CANADIAN.PKT" C.D.S.; 9 Apr. 163 env. to Rutland with 1859 6d tied by light Montreal duplex but also having a superb Handstruck "1/-" alongside which was almost certainly struck by the PO clerk on the Allan Line S.S. 'Nova Scotian'; plus similar 11 Aug. 1864 env. from Ottawa to Scotland with 1859 6d Green tied (?) by light circular numerals(?) but above the half oz and so with fair Montreal "SHORT PAID___[6]/FINE___[3]" but crossed out with mainly fine rare Packet-ship "CANADIAN.PKT" cds (13 Aug.; presumably struck on the Allan Line S.S. 'St. David' - on her first voyage) and matching very fine ship's P.O. clerk's h.s. "1/-" alongside as well as a very fine "GLASGOW PACKET/UNPAID" d.s. (26 Aug.) Good pair. UNDERPAID 10c-RATE (VIA U.S.) COVER WITH 1859 5c PAIR, "MORE-TO-PAY" & RARE "CANADIAN-PKT" C.D.S.; 14 Oct. 1864 env.from Quebec (v. fine cds on front) to Yorkshire most unusually franked with a Pair of 1859 5c (perfs. cut at left; the 5c usually only seen on internal Canadian mail; surprisingly rare on covers to GB) cancelled by an unclear Quebec numeral (but tied by the m/s "d8" rate). This 10c franking would have been fine for this cover if it had been sent within Canada, but the rate to GB was 12½c, so there is a (Quebec?) "MORE-TO-PAY [2/3 = 5d]" mark on the front, but on the Allan Line S.S. 'Peruvian' this rate was changed by the PO clerk to the correct m/s "d8" charge (2d deficient + full 6d fine). Rare thus. UNDERPAID 20c-RATE (VIA U.S.) COVER WITH 1859 10c BROWN-PURPLE PAIR & "SHORT PAID [4d]/HALF FINE [3d]" MARK; 21 Jan. 1866 large part E (one side-flap and lower flap removed; small fault at top centre barely detracts) from CORNWALL/C.W" (part cds on front) to Essex (GB) most unusually franked with a Pair of 1859 10c (perfs. cut at right; the 10c usually only seen on mail to the US; very rare on covers to GB) tied by an unclear target numeral. This 20c franking would have been fine for this (above ½oz) cover if it had been to the US, but the rate to GB was 12½c x2, so there is a (Montreal?) "SHORT PAID [4]/HALF FINE [3 = 7d]" mark on the front, and on the Allan Line S.S. 'North American' this was replaced by the PO clerk who applied his h.s. "1/-" mark. However this was wrong and the error was clearly spotted on board the ship and the "1/-" cancelled by a small mute target cancel (a second strike cancels the m/s "7d") and the correct m/s "10d" charge (4d deficient + full 6d fine). Good example of underpayment for the 6c rate using the internal Canadian rate 3c stamp - the 3c Small Queen single franking is understandably rare on covers to GB.
