Lot No:1070
Symbol:

1869 2c Manuscript surcharge on 1½c on ½a, used with Penang duplex, tiny pinhole at top, pulled perf at left, rounded corner perf at lower right, still a good example of this rare stamp, accompanied by a Philatelic Society London Certificate no. 61, dated August 1894, signed by E.D Bacon, M.P Castle and Edward B. Evans stating "the M.S Surcharge is probably genuine, but that it is quite impossible to guarantee a surcharge of this nature". The earliest Philatelic Society Certificate we have seen (and possibly the earliest surviving certificate?) from the first year of the expert committee, signed by three of the most eminent of all philatelists, nevertheless showing some caution in wording their certificate for what is clearly a genuine example of this rare stamp. S.G. 10, £6,500. Photo on Page 144. (Image1)
