Confederacy, Columbia S.C., Jul 15 (Battle of Sessionville). Blue cds ties 10¢ blue (12), full to large margins, on orange cover to Cordesville S.C., endorsed via "Strawberry Ferry" at bottom left, reverse with note "July 16th, Gave John his letter this morning, Genl. Hagood attacked the Yankees on James Island this morning and drove them to their boats. Among the prisoners are 30 contraband. The Eutaws were in the fight. The W L I (Washington Light Infantry) have two men wounded, only five of the Regt. wounded -" that apparently describes military action during the Battle of Secessionville on James Island near Charleston; docketing at top also ties 10¢, Fine.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The Battle of Secessionville (or the First Battle of James Island) was fought on June 16, 1862, during the American Civil War. Confederate forces defeated the Union's only attempt to capture Charleston, South Carolina, by land.

Cds with matching "PAID 5" rating handstamp on 1861 cover to Allendale S.C., original June 30th 1861 letter from student at the Limestone Springs Female College no longer accompanies, also includes post-war stampless use; small edge tear and tone spot, F.-V.F. and unlisted in CSA catalog.

This Limestone Springs "Paid 5" rating handstamp is the same marking used to make the 121X1 provisional stamps. All known covers with the provisional do not have a cds, but this cover proves it did exist.
