Colonial: Used to Great Britain; 1761 NEW YORK two-line in browish red in folded letter sheet to London., date lined "Sept 19 1761 and noted to be read at committee on "Jan 11, 1762", the committee was the "Propagation of the Gospel," and the writer is likely Samuel Albright, who served as the reverend for Trinity Cbhurch. On the reverse, decent strike of London "II DE" Bishop's mark. A wonderful handwritten and ecclesiastical addressee

"The Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Indians and Others in North America" was the first Protestant missionary organization of its kind in North America. It existed in concept prior to its 1787 charter as a group of Boston individuals sponsoring missionary work in New England.

Colonial: 1796 June, Wolcott, Oliver Jr. second Treasurer of the United States following Alexander Hamilton, free franked printed folded letter with full signature, from the Treasury Department bearing "FREE" handstamp "14 IV" in circle Bishop mark and Oliver Wolcott jr. sent to William Tuck, Collector in Gloucester Massachusetts with a printed receipt for $2,000

Oliver Wolcott, jr. was a Connecticut-based politician. Educated at Yale University and with a degree in law from Litchfield Law School. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as an aide-de-camp for his father. He became the first auditor of the federal treasury in 1789, in 1795 he was the comptroller of the Treasury Department later that year, Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington. In 1802, he formed Oliver Wolcott & Company, an import-export firm. Wolcott established Bank of America in 1811, working there until 1814. In 1817 he was elected governor of Connecticut and served ten consecutive one-year terms. He died in New York City on June 1, 1833.

Steamer SULTANA red oval on blue folded letter datelined "New Orleans March 23, 1845, "carried outside the mails Route 4801 to Kentucky Brief business correspondence. Ex Hugh Feldman (lot 4305).

This was the third "Sultana" steamboat built in 1843. At her launch she was the largest steamboat of her day.

Speed's and Erie became part of Western Union in 1855

1859 Columbia College (NY) Commencement mementos including and Card, Entertainment, PSI UPSILON Fraterbity invitations and card well traveled to London, Paris and, Three letters all contained in one bulging envelope New York AM PKTJUL2 to London JY 15 then to Geneva 17 July through France via Baring Brother and Hottinguers to a Mr. M.H. Grinnell (far more notations to decipher). Interesting letter content. Mr. M.H. Grinnell who is likely Moses H. Grinnell. Robert B. Minturn, Franklin H. Delano, Moses H. Grinnell and brother Henry Grinnell were partners in Grinnell, Minturn & Co. which was one of the leading transatlantic shipping companies in the 19th century. The famous Flying Cloud, arguably the greatest of the clipper ships was one of the prizes in their stable. These men were among the wealthiest of the merchant-kings of New York in their day.
