IMPRESSED STAMP DUTY: Colourless horizontal crowned-oval '[crown]/PAPUA/ONE/PENNY/STAMP DUTY' embossed sideways at upper-right of 1939 illustrated cheque for Steamships Trading Co Ltd (Port Moresby), payee's endorsement on the reverse & Victorian Stamp Duty 2d cancelled '2MAY1939' and - after return to Papua - with 'BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES/22MAY1939/PORT MORESBY, PAPUA' cachet in violet, Elsmore Online Cat $400. A beautiful item of Revenue Stamped Paper. Ex David Hopper. [Dave Elsmore records usage 1952-1964 only, that is in the 'Territory of Papua & New Guinea' period only. This is 13 years earlier and is stated by our vendor to be the only pre-WWII example recorded]
POSTAL NOTES: 1932 (circa) 'TERRITORY OF PAPUA/POSTAL NOTE' with Five-Digit Serial Numbers in Green & John Ash Imprint at the Base 20/- black & green + 3d Poundage with 'BUNA BAY/4JAN34/PAPUA' cds, punctured 'PAID/14 2 34/A' & returned to Port Moresby with '1MAR1934' handstamp, defaced with two triangular punches, soiled & some foxing, Elsmore Online Cat $500: this is the note illustrated there. Ex David Hopper who believed it was the only Papuan Postal Note recorded. However, Elsmore lists the 5/- (Cat $300), we have sighted a 10/-, and an example of the 5/6d sold at our auction of 14.11.2014 for $699.
MINER'S RIGHT: 1939 'MINER'S RIGHT' with printed 'Fee: Ten Shillings per Annum' at upper-left, dated "20.11.39" & issued at "Bwagaoia" with 'WARDEN/LOUISIADE GOLDFIELD' cachet in violet at the base, 'FEDERAL TAXATION DEPARTMENT/3JUL1941/BRISBANE' cachet on the reverse, remarkably fine for such items, Elsmore Online Cat $200. ['Book B71' is printed at the top & the printer's imprint at left reveals that ten books were produced at Port Moresby in March 1938. The Louisiade Archipelago lies ESE of Samarai. The largest island is Misima, & Bwagaoia is the principal town]
