The Carl Walske Collection of Sperati Newfoundland Reproductions, Sperati reproduced all six denominations of the 1857/1860 issues. The "reproductions" exist in a range of shades approximating both the scarlet vermilion and the orange vermilion of the genuine issues. They will be differentiated here by denomination only, not color and year.
Introduction
The following 29 lots of Newfoundland, by the master Jean de Sperati all are from the Carl Walske collection, many of them bought directly from the daughter of Sperati (these are unmarked on the reverse) and all were printed in small numbers. Most are listed in the 1955 British Philatelic Association publication, "The Work of Jean De Sperati" referenced as "Sperati I", but some later discoveries are listed in "The Work of Jean de Sperati II", including previously unlisted Forgeries by Robson Lowe and Carl Walske. Newfoundland: Five different large prints of the 4d to 1s., They were made for Robson Lowe for his efforts. These are much larger than the normal prints and far rarer. With backstamps. Ex Walske.

Newfoundland: 4 pence Type A group of 5 black and white photo exposures showing Sperati's technique to remove the genuine postmark., Sperati was not able to copy a mint example of the genuine stamp so he carefully removed the cancel of a used copy and blank spots were later covered with a fake postmark. He produced photo prints in reverse and positive at various points in the process to check his work. Rare examples of one of the master's techniques and his meticulous efforts to perfect his "reproductions" Notes on front and reverse. Very fine. ex. Walske.
Newfoundland: Covered cliché of Newfoundland grilled cancel used by Sperati, to print postmarks on his reproductions, alongside an Amsterdam postmark. Notes on front Ex Robson Lowe and Walske.
Newfoundland 1sh Type C. A working Die Proof dated June 1943, with Sperati notes including mention of "agfa" the film he used, mounting pinholes. Ex Walske.
Newfoundland 1 sh Type C. A working Die Proof dated June 1943 with Sperati's notes., Slightly different than the previous lot, a beautiful example of the master's work. Mounting pin holes. Ex Walske.

Newfoundland 8 Pence Type A, a slightly different shade than previous lot, again illustrated in Sperati II very rare, very fine Ex Walske and Sperati's daughter.

Newfoundland: Group of 9 photo prints made by the British Philatelic Association to show Sperati's work, Includes Newfoundland 4d Type A showing missing postmark and a 6d as well as 7"reproductions" all with BPA handstamps. Ex Walske.

Pencil notes on reverse, corner crease, still very fine. Rare. The Baillie Coll had only one normal 4 pence "unused" Ex Walske.
Newfoundland 4 Pence Type E "used", very fine and very rare. Unrecorded in Sperati I & II. No example in Baillie, no back stamp. Ex Lyman, Walske and probably Sperati's daughter.
Newfoundland: 6d Pence Type A, third state, Die Proof in Black signed by Sperati, Rare, only known in this format. Extremely fine. Twin to the Sir Gawaine Baillie copy. B.P.A. Handstamp Ex Walske.
