Cat No:2

1855 London Printings 2d rose-carmine SG 2, margins close to good, two superb part-strikes of the Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED' handstamp, Cat £15,000. This is Position 3 from the original block of 6: see 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon' by Peter Jaffé  at page 64, where Position 3 is not recorded. Ex Dr Donald Pearce - the front cover item: sold at our auction of 9.11.2022 for $11,380. Six similarly defaced stamps from many Colonies were gifted by Perkins Bacon to Rowland Hill's nephew Ormonde Hill. This egregious error of judgment saw Perkins Bacon lose their stamp-printing contracts. According to our records, with the exception of the Trinidad 6d & 1/-, this appears to be the only other Ormonde Hill 'CANCELLED' stamp, of the 75 known, for which all six positions are now recorded. Peter Jaffé's two examples - Positions 2 & 5 - sold for $14,950 & $19,805 respectively. The 'Besancon' (I) example - Position 1 - sold for €8400.

Cat No:6

1856-58 Adelaide Printings 1d yellow-green SG 6, margins close to good, minor blemishes, Cat £800. RPSofV Certificate (2007) as the then SG 5. Larger than Don Pearce's dated example that sold for $366. [We are pleased to see that Gibbons have now combined SG 5 & SG 6 - "green" & "yellow-green" - into a single entry, there being little difference in shade. Note also, that most examples in the market are, or are likely to be, SG 13 or 14 (now also amalgamated, as SG 13) with the roulettes trimmed-off. This situation means that genuine examples of the Imperf Adelaide Penny are much scarcer than the catalogue value would suggest]

Note that, as with SG (5) & 6, Gibbons have now amalgamated SG 13 & 14 because the shades are very difficult to distinguish.

Ex Dr Don Pearce. An attractive example of this famous error of which 'Shilling Violet' No 16 (Sep 1989) recorded a mere 15 known (not including Peter Jaffé's unique pair).
