LEEK - PAROLE P.O.W. LETTERS TO FRANCE INC. POSTAL EVASION; Unusual pair of 4 Aug. 1810 ELs with a very fine "28/MORLAIX" mark on the front but no postal charge at all - this is explained by the P.S.; "Address your letters postage free to Mr. Theodore Picard, principal Postmaster of Morlaix; he is my friend.", the other endorsed "Not Paid" and "Single. Chas. Grey" [the Transport Office Agent and censor for Leek Parole POWs] charged "4" (decimes) on delivery. Rare examples of postage evasion (or attempted) within France for a POW letter; also a pair of 1812 & pair of 1813/14 ELs from the same prisoner - generally complaining of the lack of response to his letters and seeking to be exchanged (reference to a French privateer (the Vautour) from which he was presumably captured. (6)Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, FREES (Image)
