1932 (7 July) Mattern & Griffin special dispatch cover from Moscow to USA, via Pacific Ocean, cover franked with pair of 20k and block of four of 10k Airships, canceled by Moscow 7.7.32 cds, addressed to Wooster, Ohio, fine and rare flight cover (Bennett Griffin and James Mattern tried to break the round-the-world record set by Post and Gatty. They left New York in their "Century of Progress," airplane on July 5, 1932 for Harbor Grace, Newfoundland. They crossed the Atlantic to Ireland and continued to Berlin for the first successful non-stop flight from Newfoundland. After departing Berlin, when they were near Borisov, Russia on July 7, 1932 a cabin latch fell off damaging the vertical stabilizer. They made a forced landing and had to discontinue their efforts to break the round-the-world flight record) (Image)
