Two engraved COMPOSITE DIE ESSAYS in BLACK, each with Canada Bank Note Engraving & Printing Co. ESSAYS printed se-tenant on India paper, the first consists of the 1¢ and 3¢ finished designs (58 x 30mm) with manuscript ‘19’ at top, the other with the 5¢, 10¢ and 15¢ higher-denomination designs (84 x 29mm, never produced in plate format), both are mounted on greyish cloth-reinforced paper (86 x 76mm) excised from the British American Bank Note Co. Archive ledger book page (86 x 76mm with additional partial die/vignette proofs on back labelled ‘the Queen P1’, ‘Queen No 1½B’) with manuscript ‘137’ overtop of the 10¢, ‘138’ underneath the 5¢ and ‘139’ beneath the 15¢, a unique and significant proof which is certainly the cornerstone of any Canada Bank Note Engraving & Printing Co. or Canadian Essay/Proof collection, no matter how advanced or complete.
