1916-41 Circular Die Stamped Envelopes - Marcus White's "1st One Seen" Collection. From the time the first Circular Die stamped envelopes were issued, the eminent U.S. postal stationery collector Marcus White kept the ones that arrived as incoming mail at his Norton Company business and other nearby firms. In penciled inscriptions he annotated each envelope that represented a previously unrecorded variety "1st one seen."; this collection includes the two earliest documented uses of any Circular Die envelopes: 2¢ on white paper (Scott U429) canceled February 17, 1916, at Johnson City, Tennessee, and 2¢ on amber paper (Scott U430) canceled February 18, 1916, also included is the earliest documented use of a 3¢ on amber paper (Scott U437a) canceled November 3, 1917, at Belvidere, Illinois, second day of the World War I war tax domestic letter rate, the particular variety (UPSS 2250-19) is scarce regardless of date - the complete collection consists of 108 entires: four 1½¢ (two with undated cancels; unfortunately not docketed on arrival by Marcus White), forty three 2¢, and sixty one 3¢ Circular Die stamped envelopes, of those, 88 are listed on the United Postal Stationery Society's website as having the earliest reported postmarks for their respective UPSS size, knife, and watermark varieties, these include, for example, the earliest documented use of a window envelope, 2¢ on white paper (UPSS 2250-19) canceled October 25, 1917, at Providence, Rhode Island, 11 additional earliest documented 2¢ window envelopes and 16 earliest documented 3¢ window envelopes, generally Very Fine, if Marcus White had not collected these stamped envelopes when they were originally in use, it would be impossible to assemble such a comprehensive collection today.
