ESSAY: Skilfully executed elaborate artwork for a 2d design in India ink on a postcard-size piece of thin card, the numeral '2' in Chinese white, endorsed at lower-left "Finis Coronat Opus" (the pseudonym of Maximilian Tannenberg, whose designs for the 2½d & 5d stamps were adopted). ESSAY: 1896 Post Office Design Competition entry by "Kangaroo" of a Wrapper ½d Coin design with very elaborate (and consequently unsuitable) header incorporating numerous design elements including a train & a spear-toting aborigine, expertly executed in reddish purple & Chinese white on thin card (315x246mm) with a number of marginal endorsements including "Prize divided" as well as "take out newspaper only", suggesting the design might have been considered for a Postal Card, for which it was clearly more suitable; plus an apparent voting sheet showing this as the most popular entry. A stunning exhibition item that was absent from the Walker/Eustis Collection. Sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $3775.
