1898 (Sept 26) envelope with 'Burns Philp & Company/Port Moresby' imprint on back flap to Thursday Island with Queensland Void Background ½d green strip of 4 tied by three under-inked strikes of PORT MORESBY/ BRITISH NEW GUINEA' unframed cds with a largely very fine strike alongside, 'COOKTOWN/OC 7/98' unframed cds transit and 'THURSDAY ISLAND/OC14/89/QUEENSLAND' unframed cds arrival backstamps, a few folds, tape repairs on reverse and truncated at base. The indirect route via North Queensland was perhaps necessitated by the shipping timetable; compare Lot 1380 sent to England directly via Thursday Island, which would have saved considerable time in this instance. 1899 large piece with largely very fine strike of the rare 'TAMATA/DE 3/99/B.N.G' unframed cds (Lee #48; rated F; earliest recorded date; day & month wheels inverted) alongside Queensland Widow's Weeds ½d green strip of 3 tied by 'B.N.G' cancel (9-bars) of Samarai applied in transit, a couple of minor scissor-cut repairs one of which just intrudes on the 'G' of 'B.N.G.'. Roger Lee states that very few of the Widow's Weeds ½d stamps are known used in British New Guinea, and that the address is in the distinctive handwriting of Anglican Missionary Rev Copland King to his home 'St Johns' in Camden (NSW). Tamata PO -.12.1899; closed mid-1905. [Gold Mining]

1900 (March 9) usage of Queensland Scenic Postal Card 1½d black 'Cane-field and Selector's Home' view with largely very fine stike of 'SAMARAI/B.N.G' unframed cds (Lee #24; fleorons) alongside very fine 'B.N.G' cancel (9-bars) to England with lengthy personal message headed "Dogura BNG" and signed "HN" written by Rev Henry Newton including " ... I have had my first taste of fever ...", 'COOKTOWN/MR16/00/QUEENSLAND' unframed cds & Brisbane transit backstamps and Bristol 'AP29/00' cds arrival on face, light central vertical fold & minor edge faults.  Roger Lee states that this is one of only three Queensland Scenic Postal Cards known used from British New Guinea, and that it was probably carried there by Rev Newton on his first arrival in late-1899. Dogura Mission was established in 1891 near the village of Wedau, some 60kms NW of Samarai. Rev Newton was appointed Bishop of Carpentaria in 1915 and Bishop of New Guinea in 1922, retiring in 1937 whereupon he settled at Dogura. The 1½d foreign postcard rate applied for mail to Great Britain until 1905.
