1913 (Feb 17) 'Cape Bridgewater' picture postcard sent from "Portland/Feb 17th" to Bung Bong with Kangaroo 1d red solo franking tied 'T.P.O.11/UP 18FE13/VICTORIA' cds, taxed with oval 'T 1D/L[ATE] FEE' h/s in violet at U/L and 1d Postage Due affixed tied by initials in red crayon, couple of minor aging marks. Apparently posted directly onto the train at Portland; as the card was franked for the 1d postcard rate only without the 'late fee' payable for this service, it was taxed. From Portland there were two options to get the item to Bung Bong, situated on the Ararat-Maryborough railway line: 1) direct by way of the Portland Line to Ararat (which did not have a TPO service); or 2) by a 'great circle route' via the Port Fairy Line to Geelong and the Ballarat Line to Ararat. The use of the 'TPO 11' cds employed on the Ballarat Line strongly suggests that the item was carried by this circuitous route; however, the possibility remains that this canceller was applied at Ararat, to which the Ballarat Line mail vans occassionally extended their trips (see Molnar & Waugh p32).
