"Royal William" Maiden Return Voyage, New York Aug. 4th - Liverpool Aug. 19th 1838. Folded letter datelined "New York, August 4th 1838" to London, endorsed "pr Steam Ship, Royal William" at top, letter hand carried to ship's agent, "Ship Letter, Liverpool" framed backstamp and manuscript "1/7" 1s7d due rating for 11d inland plus 8d ship letter fee, partial red London (8.21) arrival backstamp; hint of top edge toning, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Pullin.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

The Transatlantic Steam Ship Company planned two steam ships. Lacking a second ship they chartered the "Royal William".

"Royal William" Final Voyage, Liverpool Dec. 15th 1838 - New York Jan. 6th 1839. Folded letter with "Moreton in March" rimless backstamp and red ms. "P 1/-" prepaid 1s packet rating, red London (12.14) transit backstamp and red "Ship Letter, Liverpool, 14 DE 14, 1838" rimless cds, red "New-York, Ship, Jan 6" transit cds and "27" due rating for 25¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, Queenstown transit cds and "1/4½" plus "7" ratings totaled "1/11½" for 1s11½d due, Very Fine and scarce use carried on the final voyage of the "Royal William", ex-Pullin.

"Royal William" Final Return Voyage, New York January 16th - Liverpool Feb. 3rd 1839. Folded letter datelined "New York, Jany 15/16 1839" to Cognac, France, entered mails with "Liverpool/Ship Letter" and London (2.4) backstamps, framed "Packet Letter" handstamp, blue Calais (2.6) entry cds and Cognac (2.8) arrival backstamp, manuscript "32" decimes due rating, Very Fine, Letters carried on any of the three Royal William voyages destined for France are quite uncommon, ex-Winter, Pullin.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Letter taken to mail bag at ship agent's office and not to post office, where 25¢ freight money fee undoubtedly paid, but not shown on letter. Liverpool marked 1s7d postage due in London (8d ship fee plus 11d British transit to London). London Foreign Office debited French 1s6d under Anglo-French Convention of 1836 (8d ship fee plus 10d British transit fee to France). Paris marked 32 decimes postage due (18 dec. for British debit plus 14 dec. French inland fee).

"President" Maiden Voyage, Liverpool Aug. 1st - New York Aug. 17th 1840. Folded letter to Montreal, Canada with red "Ship-Letter, Liverpool, 31JY31, 1840" crowned rimless cds and matching "8" pence rating handstamp, endorsed "p. President Steamer", red "New-York, Ship, Aug 18" cds with manuscript "20¾" due rating for 18¾¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, Canada manuscript "1/5½" due rating for 11d cy U.S. debit plus 4½d cy inland, Very Fine and scarce maiden voyage, ex-Pullin.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

The "President" was a vessel of the British & American Steam Navigation Company, which also owned the "Sirius" and the "British Queen". The "President" was lost without a trace on her third eastbound sailing.
