Hong Kong, Security Handstamps - Augustine Heard & Co: 1867 (14 Dec.) printed envelope (with enclosed letter) to Lynn, Massachusetts, U.S.A. "Via Marseille" and London (17?1.68) bearing 1863-71 6c. and 48c. (few trimmed perfs. at right from placement over the edge) cancelled "B62" and tied by "Augustine, Heard & Co./Hong Kong" blue dated double-ring h.s., with a second very fine strike on reverse, with "Hong Kong/C" despatch c.d.s. adjacent, rated "2/1½" and "1" (Colonial charge) with "3/cents" credit h.s. to U.S.A. Interesting contents include an account of a major fire at the warehouses in Hong Kong. S.G. 10, 17. Sell I-5 (illustrated).

Hong Kong, Holliday Wise & Co: 1896 (9 Apr.) large part printed envelope (reduced at left) to Manchester (11.5) bearing 1882-96 10c. violet on red and 30c. and 1891 50c. on 48c. and $1 on 96c., both with additional Chinese character surcharge, all with part "Holliday, Wise & Co./Hong Kong" violet h.s. and tied by "Hong Kong/C" c.d.s., address partially erased and rewritten, vertical and horizontal folds (one of which crosses the 50c.), very rare and attractive usage of the $1 on 96c. Air Commodore Gurevitch records only five covers and part covers with the $1 on 96c. (which does not include this cover) and noted that the only complete covers were philatelic.

Mr. Orsetti noted that this cover also shows that the security markings were sometimes applied on mint sheets of stamps, before they were applied, in order to protect them from being stolen and resold.
