Cat No:11X4

#11X4, 5c Black on gray lilac, Type III, pos. 5, a collectable used example of this Postmasters' Provisional rarity, large margins at top and right, clear to cutting at bottom and left, strong color on clean fresh paper, two light horizontal ms. stroke cancels, mild crease, very good appearance. The rarity of the Five Cent St. Louis Bear on Gray lilac paper is due to the fact that the layout of the Second State impressions had only one 5c stamp in the subject of six (at position 5), with three 10c and two 20c. Only one St. Louis Bear stamp is rarer, that being the 20c on greenish paper. Only a minute number of this 5c stamp exist. (Image)
