HAND-COLOURED "QUIZ" (SIR J.P. MELLOR) PRINTED COMIC FISHING DESIGN WITH 1d RED EX LONDON; Unrecorded(?) printed design used from London to Blackpool with 1d Red tied by only the numeral half of an "SE/1" Duplex (the matching cds applied on the reverse by a kind postal clerk!); the design has the "QUIZ" imprint of the lawyer & Punch cartoonist Sir John Paget Mellor (1862-1929) and depicts a fisherman trying to catch two goldfish in a bowl with the 1d Red acting as a "NOTICE" on a tree and the address in a bag of "BAIT". The whole has been neatly hand-coloured, and the sender has written beneath the flap; "Jack's tinting" - presumably Jack was a member of the family. We are not aware of any other examples of this quirky design having been recorded, and this is a rare example of a hand-coloured Victorian comic envelope.
