POSTAL HISTORY: circa 1895 usage of New Zealand Sideface 2½d blue with light but obvious strike of the rare NSW-pattern 'N.I'-in-Bars cancellation in violet.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1936 (Sept 21) Postmaster General's Department receipt for registered article with compensation details printed on reverse, for item sent to USA with complete almost very fine strike of 'NORFOLK ISLAND/AUSTRALIA' cds on face.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1941 German POW Postcard with Greek Red Cross and Swiss Red Cross cachets both in rosine plus German & Sydney censor handstamps, to "Mrs DE Whisker/Police Station/Norfolk Island" advising of the sender's capture, with Geneva machine transit of 24VII/1941, light vertical bend & minor blemishes. Rare: we know of only one other POW item to Norfolk Island, a later card from the same correspondence, that sold at our auction of 10.4.2010 for $1690. In 1927, a federal police station was established on the island. From at least 1939, Kenneth Cook Whisker, the addressee's husband, was the Norfolk Island constable. The writer, Walter Godfrey Stubbing, was Mrs Whisker's son. He had enlisted in the New Zealand Forces & was captured in Greece (probably on Crete?). [The illustration is above Lot 842]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1948 (July 4) airmail cover to USA with Ball Bay 5½d indigo marginal single tied by largely very fine strike of 'R.N.Z.A.F./ E /N.Z.A.P.O.' Air Force cds used at the Norfolk Island airfield, endorsed in pencil on reverse "Last day of RNZAF PO in Norfolk Island", light central fold, opened a little roughly at top & minor aging marks. Ex David Murray Brown.[Proud D2; recorded 11.2.1944 to 23.6.1948; rated 1000pts]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1957 (May 9) Registrar's Office Norfolk Island envelope airmail to New Zealand with scarce franking of Ball Bay 1d violet x2 and Pitcairners' Landing 3d x2 tied by largely fine complete strikes of 'NORFOLK ISLAND/AUST' cds, minor edge faults at top. The airmail letter rate was 8d per ½oz.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1960s-90s accumulation of commercial mail to Australia with airmail covers, advertising envelopes, postcards plus a couple of used PSEs, wide variety of frankings including Birds & QEII coils and lots of solos, noted 1967 illustrated tourist cover with Ships 4c re-directed, 1969 Kingfisher Airtel long envelope with Ships 7c & 10c, 1975 CBA envelope with die-cut UPU 10c, 1978 Prouds cover with Butterflies 20c and to Perth with die-cut Guiding 18c, 1979 to ACT with die-cut Scouting 20c & to NSW with Scouting 25c, etc, also a group of concessional rate local covers with Birds, Buildings & Butterflies 1c solos then later with Flowers & Planes 5c local rate issues, some postmark interest, a few with minor blemishes but generally fine to very fine. POSTAL HISTORY: 1981 (June 30) private illustrated fold-out 'Photo Letter' with Norfolk Island Airlines plane on face & reverse and views of the island inside, to England with lengthy social message describing life on the island and Pitcairn Migration 60c solo tied by a largely very fine complete strikes of 'NORFOLK/ISLAND' cds. The Zone 5 airmail letter rate was 60c up to 10g.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1984 & 1985 social usages of illustrated aerogrammes 40c Pine & Aerial View uprated with 5c red booklet stamp, and 45c Orchids with different maps of the island on the reverse, plus 1995 Foenkaad (= Phonecard) Bureau $3.45 on 41c Education PSE unused x10. Ex Ed Druce, who sent the Aerogrammes to his wife & daughter respectively during different stints on the island.
