C1, Beautifully centered example of the Hawker Airmail. The stamp has deep intense colour and is neatly tied by St. John's 12 April 1919 machine cancel on flight cover, addr to London. The stamp has "JAR" initials on reverse (Postmaster J.A. Robinson of St. John's). This Trans-Atlantic flight crash landed in the ocean after about 13 hours of flying. Only 95 stamps were used on covers & only a small fraction still exist. VF. Ex Frank Lanza & this cover was the best condition cover he found in years of collecting! The flight departed from Harbour Grace on July 4, crash landing later at Parrsboro Nova Scotia. The cover has Steer Brothers imprint on back flap. F-VF, small tear at left. Only 115 pieces carried from the St. John's mail and only 34 are recorded in the extensive Vasseur 2015 census (AAMC #FF-4) (Image)
