EARLY COVER TO G.B. - ILLEGALLY POSTED AS AN INLAND LETTER AT REMOTE "CHUDLEIGH" P.O.; 14 Nov. 1770 E (light toning and reinforced folds) from "Revd. Mr. Langman, M[issionar]y. at St. John's Town, Newfoundland (ex the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel correspondence) to London ("Westminster") with a mainly fine early "CHUDLEIGH" mark on the flap beside a smudged "31/DE" arrival Bishop Mark. The letter was only charged "4[d]" (the above 80 miles rate) and was illegally not declared as a Ship Letter on posting. Rare example of a Transatlantic letter posted in this small Devon P.O. [For a similar 1780 letter with a "CHUD/LEIGH" mark from the same correspondence see the Allan Steinhart 2005 sale, lot 1288; realised CHF 1,050.]Cross Reference: DEVON, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL (Image)
