1848 (Oct 18) entire letter to London with fine strike of 'PAID/AT/AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND' crowned-circle handstamp in red SG #CC1 (Cat £300 on cover) and very fine 'AUCKLAND/A/OC18/1848/A/NEW ZEALAND' backstamp in black, rated "4" in red & "1/-" in black, London '20MAR20/[1849]' arrival backstamp. [Correspondence is signed by RN Wynyard & initialled by him on the front. Wynyard was a British soldier and Colonial Administrator who took part in the 1844 Flagstaff War and in 1846 was a member of the party who stormed Ruapekapeka. He was Commander of Military Forces in New Zealand between 1851 and 1858 and later served as Acting Governor of New Zealand for two short periods.] (Image1)
