For 25 months of the 4 turbulent years just before the Civil War, Lt. Colonel Robert E. Lee saw service in Texas at Camp Cooper, watching the federal governments "humanizing" experiment with the wild Comanches; at San Antonio, commanding the Department of Texas; and at Fort Mason, headquarters of the Second Cavalry. Colonel Henry D. Ogden. First Commander of the Louisiana Native Guards (1861-62), a Detailed Letter Giving the Positions and Couriers Assigned To Each Station Between Alexandria and Natchez, Fort Beauregard, June 28th, 1863, letter addressed to Major Ogden from Lt. J.C. Carter detailing who he has placed at the 13 courier posts between Alexandria and Natchez which details of the posting as well as distance from post to post. 3+ large 8" X 10" letter on gray paper addressed to Major Ogden who was in charge of the couriers at Alexandria to Natchez. Clark lists the post #, distance from the next post, cost per day to operate, where forage was obtained for each post, and names of couriers assigned to each post. This was the change of couriers as the last list of couriers in this correspondence was made on June 21, 1863, so the change was made weekly. The couriers on these posts brought vital information to the Trans-Mississippi Department from the fighting at Vicksburg and Port Hudson, since Natchez was halfway between those fortifications. Boldly written by Clark to Ogden., Very Fine and well written.

On May 2nd, 1861, Governor Thomas Moore of Louisiana accepted the regiment as part of the Louisiana Militia. All the line officers were men of color and the Governor appointed Militia Colonel Henry D. Ogden as the white commander of the regiment. US$400-600 (Image)

Colonel Henry D. Ogden. First Commander of the Louisiana Native Guards (1861-62), Detailed Letter Giving The positions and Couriers Assigned To Each Station Between Alexandria and Natchez, Alexandria, LA, June 2, 1863, to Major Franklin Clack, commanding post at Alexandria, LA from Lt. Haas assigned by Major Ogden to organize and staff the line of couriers. Two pages 8"x10" in fine manuscript noted "Copy." Lt. Haas details the names of the couriers assigned to all 13 courier posts between Natchez and Alexandria, LA and gives the distance from each post to the next along with whose property the post was located on as well as how forage was obtained for the assigned couriers, i.e., #2 H. McKnight and J.B. Johnson at George Dean's at $3 per day, distance from last post 11 miles. All 13 posts are listed in a similar manner. This courier line was the life blood of the Trans-Mississippi communication with the Eastern front especially the news from Vicksburg where fighting was raging as well as news from Port Hudson where similar fighting was going ongoing. An important communication., Very Fine and extremely well written.

Ruggles reading "What portion of the forces do you wish me to take from this place the force here is not in my opinion sufficient to hold the place against a land attack of a force of any size, my Rank entitles me to at least a Brigade Col Miles will have a Command twice as large as mine at Ponchatoala, W. R. Beall, Brig. Genl.", Very Fine and scarce military telegraph.

The Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case by Lewis Carroll. (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), published by Emberlin & Son, 1890 (but after 1907). Folded card holder, lined with linen cloth, designed to hold and protect stamps of various sizes, fourth edition. The holder is decorated with select illustrations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by John Tenniel. On the interior stamp case, the Duchess's Baby that Alice has in her arms on the cover of the card holder (featured in The Nursery Alice) transforms into a Pig when the stamp case is pulled out. On the back of the holder is featured the Cheshire Cat. When the stamp case is pulled out, the Cheshire Cat virtually disappears, with only his grin left in place. Postage-stamp case, its holder, and Carroll's 39-page pamphlet Eight or Nine Wise Words About Letter Writing, published in 1907. Inside of case with places for stamps of different denominations., F.-V.F., rare and collectible stamp case and piece of Carrolliana.
