WORLD WAR I: The fascinating and beautifully presented social history display collection of the 9.11.1914 naval engagament off Cocos Islands between HMAS 'Sydney' and the German raider SMS 'Emden', formed over many years by Mrs Kim Dwyer from New South Wales. This was Australia's first ever naval victory but the escape of many of the German crew and their return to The Fatherland via Yemen and Turkey is the stuff of romantic legend. The display begins with items from the pre-war days of both ships, including a letter signed by the 'Sydney's captain "JohnCTGlossop", who rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral. The story of the Battle of Cocos is well-developed, as is the theft of the Clunies-Ross yacht 'Ayeesha' and its mid-ocean rendezvous with the German merchant ship 'Choising'. Some 35 postcards including real photo types add to the story, as do two postal items to 'Emden' prisoners of war. Four large contemporary prints of photos taken on Cocos (327x220mm; 380x220mm; and two of 405x217mm) are highlights, and are supplemented by many modern prints from photos in the Australian War Memorial and elsewhere. The display includes German commemorative medallions honouring Captain von Mueller x2 and his First Officer von Mucke, and a Mexican 8 reales coin from the wreck with silver mount added at Sydney (the so-called Emden Medal). Other commemorative items include 2004 Perth Mint 'Sydney'/'Emden' coloured $1 coin for the Cook Islands and Macquarie Mint 42mm silver medallion; 2014 Macquarie Mint 35mm silver & 13mm 14ct gold pieces; 'HMAS SYDNEY' $100 gold (1oz, 0.999) coin for Niue; and 2014 Australia Post tiny 'Sydney' Miniature Sheet ('115/150') & 50c coin. Ephemera includes cigarette cards x8, labels x3 and a 10pf Emden canteen token inscribed 'KANTINE/SMS/EMDEN', plus six actual pages from books or newspapers with accounts of the events (one from Gibraltar is poor, but it must be very rare). Finally, there are two large Imperial Defence Charts, the first showing the routes of ships assembling to form the First Convoy and the subsequent route to Egypt including the Cocos incident; and the other of the 'Emden's Indian Ocean meanderings prior to it being sunk.
