RARE The Pennsylvania Society gold medal, awarded (almost) annually since 1909; this example is from the family of the 1928 medallist William Williams Keen, Jr. (1837-1932), a well-known Civil War surgeon, physician and professor, the first brain surgeon in the United States and a president of the AMA, Philosophical Society and other organizations; diameter 70mm and weight 228.6 grams yielding 7.35 troy ounces gold; obverse has right bust of William Penn, designer's mark "JF Dec MCMIX" (John Flanagan - designer of the Washington Quarter); reverse "For Distinguished Achievement" and personifications of Character, Force, Intelligence and Fame; rim has Keen's name and "Fine Gold," later Society medals were produced in 14k gold but the earlier ones were .999; rarely offered to the public, this medal has both intrinsic as well as historic value.
