1840 1d and 2d endorsed 'Proof' in manuscript selection including 1d Letter Sheet A25, 1d Envelope A172, 2d Letter Sheet a97 2d Envelope a198; in addition an unused 1d Letter Sheet A228 without 'Proof'; in one of the Mulready also an handwritten note stating "These Mulready envelopes where the first proofs sent to the Rt Hon Henry Goulburn, chancellor of the Exchange, for approval and therefore the first stamps ever issued"; as per SG spec MP9 these 1d and 2d letter sheets or envelopes were annotated 'Proof' in manuscript by Rowland Hill or John Ledingham (Rowland Hill's clerk), a very difficult group to assemble (Image)
