Charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman 1898, named group of five awarded to Lce Corp J Lowe 21st Lancers, comprising Queen's Sudan Medal impressed '3261 Lce CPL. J. LOWE 21st L'CRS.', WWI 1914-15 Star, War Medal, Victory Medal all impressed 'GS-10535/L. SJT. (or) CPL  J. LOWE/9-LRS.', and Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896-1908 engraved '3261 Lce CORPL. J. LOWE 21st L'crs' with 'KHARTOUM' clasp, mounted to card, with correspondance verifying validity of group. (5) The charge of the 21st Lancers on the 2nd September 1898 was one of the last full-scale cavalry charges of the British Army. The 350 men believed the attack would be against 700 muslims, when in fact 2000 tribesmen were concealed in a gully. A young Winston Churchill charged with the cavalry. Three Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the Regiment. Included in the supporting provenance for the group is a letter from the Regimental Secretary dated 1980 which in part reads: "It also indicates that he (Lowe) was in "B" Squadron of the Regiment during the campaign, commanded by Major J Fowle with Captain P A Kenna as second in command and Hon R H de Montmorency, H B Protheroe-Smith, J C Brinton and R S Grenfell as Troop leaders. The second and third named of these officers were awarded the VC and the last named killed in the charge of the Regiment at Omdurman, so LCpl Lowe must have earned his medal the hard way!" (Image1)
