THE JOHN "JAY" LEWIS MOUNTED BALANCE COLLECTION OF FIRST ISSUE HANDSTAMPED CANCELS, includes about 2550 various singles, there are a few pages of multiples towards the back of this album, mounted on Scott pages by issue, virtually all handstamps but there are a few printed and some subject oriented MC's, the overall condition is mixed and faults are to be expected here, a really wonderful variety of cancels and issues but there is some duplication to be considered, the key to this collection is of course the value in the cancels, we have estimated the retail value of this collection as such: about 200 items would retail in the $50-100+ each range, 300 at $25-50, 500 at $15-25, 500 at $10-15, 500 at $5-10 and 550 at $2-5; the math works out on the low estimate end at $33,000 and this number is in our opinion very conservative give what cancels bring this this current market, to assemble a collection of this magnitude would take decades and certainly tens of thousands of dollars AND thousands of dollars in travel and shipping expenses, we have scanned about a dozen pages but these in no way will even come close to giving a serious bidder an accurate picture of just how many stamps and how many great cancels are in this collection, Mr. Lewis obviously was passionate about finding great strikes and interesting subjects in the cancels he sought out, this collection is without question the most important mounted collection of First Issue handstamped cancels we have ever offered and as such a very rare offering which comes along only once is a few decades, plan on spending some time with this one, (ENV $7,500-10,000) (Image)
