Shanghai, 1874 (1 Dec.) neat envelope to "Miss Fey, Hong-Kew, Shanghai" bearing Second Candareen Provisional surcharge in blue 3ca. on 2c. rose perf. 12, cancelled by "Local Post Office Shanghai" small garter h.s. in red and showing "Shanghai/Local Post/G" c.d.s. in blue on reverse, small opening tear at top extending vertically through the flap at back, fine to very fine and a rare usage of the Candareens Provisional surcharge, predating by at least one month the January 1875 issue date ascribed by Lyons Livingston, Dr. Wei-Liang Chow and the traditional literature. Livingston 73.

Chinkiang, 1894 (19 June) Shanghai Local Post ½c. wrapper to E.K.A. Ruhstrat, the Customs official at Chinkiang (20.6), cancelled by "Shanghai/Local Post/H" c.d.s. in blue, with another strike on reverse and "Customs/Chinkiang" double-ring arrival d.s., fine and remarkable usage through the Customs Post.

A rare example of a Local Post wrapper sent to Chinkiang through the Shanghai Local Post just prior to the opening of the Chinkiang Local Post during the forerunner period when the Imperial Maritime Customs Post acted as the agent for Chinkiang.

The addressee, Ernst Ruhstrat, the son of Friedrich Andreas Ruhstrat (Chairman of the State Ministry of the German State of Oldenburg) was a member of the Customs Service in China for many years, having been originally stationed in Shanghai, then in Formosa during the mid-eighties when the French blockaded the island, and later back in China itself.
