Liberia, Monrovia 19th February 1838. Dateline on lengthy 3-page letter to Rev. D.A. Profit at the Colonization Rooms in New York City, privately carried with "per Barque Marine" endorsement at bottom left, letter written by Rev. John Seys regarding receiving a recent letter from Profit through Gov. Matthias of Bassa Cove, the success in the colonization of Liberia…Men must witness the effects themselves, behold with their own eyes, the peace, content, independence and unshackled freedom of the Citizens of Liberia and extolls the great benefit of the missionary work being carried out; some splitting along folds, otherwise Very Fine, a powerful and early letter from Monrovia. Estimate  $200 - 300. Rev. John Seys became a missionary to the slaves. In 1834 he was sent to Liberia, Africa as a missionary. In 1866, he returned to the U. S., and took over the school for black children at Nashville, Tenn. The same year, President Johnson requested that he return to Africa as U. S.
