Liberia, 1920, 5¢ on 10¢ Blue & Black, Buchanan Typewritten Surcharge. Scott No. 178e-180f  Estimate $750 - 1,000. These unusual provisional type surcharges were done mostly on panes where the printed overprints where very badly misplaced, often occurring between two stamps so that some vertical rows missed any surcharge at all. These typewritten surcharges come in two types, the first type with normal lettering keys in black and second type in larger size keys in violet. Phillip Cockrill noted in his Series Booklet 21 that he once had a chance to purchase 8 covers bearing these stamps in the 1950's…I went and found that they were eight rather obviously philatelic covers all with various "5" typewritten surcharges…I turned them down - and have regretted it ever since - as I have never seen another cover with any of these typed surcharges since, philatelic or otherwise. . $0 (Image)
