Cat No:37da variety
3d olive-green Die II Inserted 'CA' Monogram single ACSC 13(1)za (SG 37da variety) alongside 6d pale greyish-violet Die II block of 4 (the scarcest of the Harrison shades before introduction of the Die IIB plate, light stain from wax seal on the reverse) & single tied by Sydney cds of 28JE21 to oversized cover (280x123mm) to Congoleum Co in Pennsylvania with printed 'No Dutiable Matter whatever is con-/tained in this letter' at upper-left, some soiling/minor stains, Cat $3000+ for a 3d Monogram mounted mint single (not priced used) and 6d used x5 singles. A spectacular showpiece for any collection of Kangaroo stamps, "usage", or postal history.
The rate was 3d per ½oz foreign letter x11, and the envelope presumably contained a sample of congoleum (linoleum flooring). It could have been sent at the Samples Rate of 3d per 4oz but is not endorsed for that rate & its use is unlikely because at 2/9d the envelope would have weighed an improbable 44oz!
The rarity of commercially used monograms is beginning to be appreciated. A used example of this 3d monogram sold at our auction of 21.2.2024 for $1140 but, correctly used in-period on commercial cover, is another level of rarity altogether. By comparison, a £1 grey is catalogued at $575 used but at $5000 on commercial cover (supported by a recent sale at that level of the only known usage on a similarly-oversized cover). The comparative mounted monogram price ($2250) and the realisation for a commercially used one would support an on-cover catalogue value of $20,000+ for this item.
3d yellow-olive Die I Plate 2 'JBC' Monogram strip of 3 ACSC 13A(2)zb, exceptional centring, lightly mounted with the monogram unit showing only the faintest evidence of having been hinged, Cat $4500. A lovely strip.
3d olive Die II ACSC 13F (SG 37d) from the lower-right corner of the pane Pos [60] with marginal watermark lines at right & base, very minor gum bend at upper left, unmounted, Cat $1100 (£225 for mounted).
3d olive-green Die I Plate 2 'JBC' Monogram single ACSC 13K(2)zc in a horizontal pair, unmounted, Cat $1250+ for a mounted monogram single (+ a premium for the shade) plus $325 for the unmounted single.
6d pale ultramarine Die IIB ACSC 20C (SG 38d) block of 10 (5x2), variable centring, one unit with a small paper inclusion, a few minor gum bends, unmounted, Cat $7500+ for singles (£900+ for mounted). Multiples of this size are rarely encountered.
9d violet Die IIB Plate 4 TS Harrison Imprint ('N' over 'MP') block of 4 ACSC 27(4)zb the first unit with unlisted White Flaw between Value Tablet & 'P' of 'PENCE', lightly mounted in margin impinging slightly onto upper-right unit, the other three units unmounted, Cat $2750 for mounted.
9d violet Die IIB/Die II Plate 4 John Ash Imprint ('N' over 'N') block of 4 with the upper-right unit a Die II Substitution ACSC 27(4)zg, light even gum aging, the upper units with a small hinge remainder, the lower units unmounted, Cat $1500.
1/- pale blue-green Plate 4 TS Harrison Two-Line Imprint block of 4 ACSC 33(4)z, quite well centred for an imprint piece, the gum a little yellowed as is characteristic of this printing, unmounted, Cat $2500. Ex 'Dubois (Part I): sold for SFr975.
2/- brown ACSC 37A (SG 41) marginal block of 4 from the base of the sheet with part-TS Harrison Two-Line Imprint, exceptional centring, characteristic 'fluffy' perfs, mounted on the upper units & in the margin, the lower units are unmounted, Cat $5900+ for two mounted and two unmounted singles (£1200+ for four mounted singles). Ex 'Goldfarm' (sold for US$2760) and 'Artemis': sold at our auction of 1.12.2021 for $3185.
Harrison Imprint blocks of the 2/- brown are extremely rare. The ACSC states that the only One-Line Imprint block is in the Royal Collection, and that there is only one Two-Line Imprint block "in private hands" - Ex 'Zed', sold at our auction of 25.1.2003 for $56,000 - but unpriced in the catalogue.
2/- deep brown Plate 2 One Line 'T.S. HARRISON' Imprint Pair ACSC 37D(2)zg, well centred for an imprint piece, very lightly mounted in the gutter which just intrudes onto the left-hand unit, the right-hand is unmounted, Cat $20,000+, for a mounted pair, plus a premium for the scarcer shade. A rarity. Superb. Ex Kevin Nelson - sold at our auction of 3.5.2002 as described for $8960 - and 'Dubois' (I), where described as "unmounted": sold for SFr6100.
5/- grey & orange-yellow Two Line 'T.S. HARRISON' Imprint Pair as ACSC 44Bze with an early state of the Tsunami off Sydney, remarkably well centred, a little aged but unmounted, Cat $3500+, for a mounted imprint pair (or $4000 for two unmounted singles). Ex 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr750.
5/- grey & pale yellow TS Harrison Imprint block of 4, unit [R55] with Tsunami off NSW Coast (Early State) ACSC 44Dzd, gum-toning mostly on the right hand units & the lower-right unit with a rounded corner at lower-right, the upper units lightly mounted & the lower units unmounted, Cat $13,500. [Sold at our auction of 24.4.2009 for $6900. The ACSC states "Harrison imprints larger than pairs are rare. Six blocks of 4 & a block of 8 are recorded"]
10/- grey & pink with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 48a (SG 43aw), lightly mounted, Cat $4750 (£2750). [Peter O'Rourke's similarly centred example sold for $1670]
10/- grey & pink with the Watermark Sideways ACSC 48aa (SG 43ab) additionally with the Kangaroo Misplaced into the Bight #48cb, good colour but thinned and a corner fault at lower left, light indistinct cancellation at the base, Cat $20,000+ (£19,000+). [Rare: the ACSC states that "two unused [both without gum] and about ten used examples are recorded"]
