£1 CHESTNUT & BRIGHT BLUE 'CA' MONOGRAM SINGLE. FINE & FRESH MINT EXAMPLE. EXTREMELY RARE.
Australian Commonwealth Specialist Catalogue: 52Bza.
The £1 Third Watermark monograms - either 'CA' or 'JBC' are great rarities. Until this stamp was discovered in 2013 - the first "new" discovery in over 40 years - only four 'CA' Monograms had been recorded: two mint strips of three, one of which is in the Royal Collection, and two mint singles, one of which is in the Chapman Collection, which now forms part of the Australia Post Archival Collection. The other mint single example was sold as part of the Arthur Gray Collection in 2007 for the equivalent of AU$73,000.
There are five First Wmk single examples recorded, however all of these, as well as the other two Third Wmk examples have the monogram more-or-less trimmed. This stamp, therefore, is UNIQUE in having the ONLY COMPLETE MONOGRAM KNOWN.
A highly important AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH rarity.
