2/- brown Plate 2 'CA' Monogram single ACSC 36(2)za, minor crease in the margin at lower-right otherwise very fine postally used with fine small-part strike of the scarce oval '[CHIEF PARCEL OFFI]CE/ ----1915/[MELB]OURN[E]' datestamp that barely impinges on the Kangaroo or the Monogram, Cat $40,000 for mint; unpriced used. Unique: an exciting new discovery that has never before been on the market.
The ACSC states in footnote 5 that "only three [sic] 'CA' monograms can be traced, a mint strip of 3 in the Royal Collection, and three [sic] mint singles, one in the Australian National Philatelic Collection". The similarly centred 'Artemis' mint single sold at our auction of 1.12.2021 for $22,760. In our opinion, this is a superior item. So few used monogram stamps exist that the ACSC doesn't provide prices for them. Of all the First and Second Watermark high denomination Kangaroos, postally used stamps are much scarcer than mint examples. And many of the genuine used stamps exhibit faults, from having been used on parcels. If you collect postally used material, you will appreciate the truth of that statement. And if you collect used material, you should desire to be the owner of this remarkable rarity. Note that way back on 14.9.2002, we sold the only recorded used Second Wmk 5/- monogram single for $24,640. We expect the equally rare - read "unique" - 2/- monogram should achieve at least that figure.
5/- grey & chrome with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 43a (SG 30w), very fresh and well centred with clean-cut perfs, Cat $2000 (£1400). A premium-grade example. Ex 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr915.
5/- deep grey & chrome-yellow with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 43Ba (SG 30w), quite well centred, a couple of minor imperfections still very attractive, very lightly mounted, Cat $2000 (£1300).
PUNCTURED 'OS': 2/- brown ACSC 36ba (SG O36) from the top of the sheet with horizontal watermark line, very well-centred for this denomination, tiny hinge remainder, Cat $5000 (£1900).
