1d red Die II punctured 'OS/NSW' with the Perfin Inverted, well centred, neat Sydney machine cancel. PCNZA Certificate (2023). A less well-centred example with minor blemishes - but with a circular datestamp - sold at our auction of 27.4.2022 for $1062. [NB: we found this stamp in a largely unsorted album accumulation]
1d red Die IIA Plate G punctured Small 'OS' ACSC 4(G)ba (SG O17e) complete sheet of 120 (12x10) with numerous varieties including Cracked Electro through 'O' of 'ONE' #4(G)d [L4; a very early state], White Flaw in Gulf of Carpentaria [L11; obstructed by a puncture hole], Land Bridge between Tasmania & First 'N' of 'PENNY' [L30], Mange on Kangaroo's Back [L40], Retouch to Left of 'AUSTRALIA' [R11], Cut-Throat Kangaroo [R12], Retouch to 'T' etc [R15], Cracked Electro - the "Big Crack - from Frame to U/L of First 'A' of 'AUSTRALIA' to Lower Frame below E' of 'ONE' Late State [R26], Break in R/H Frame opposite Top of Tasmania [R37], Vertical Scratch thru Last 'A' of 'AUSTRALIA' [R48] and Substituted Die II Cliché [R55] creating a setenant Die II-IIA Pair, other varieties as listed in the Handbook by Adams Bell & Pope, and both No Monogram strips of 3, some minor gum discolouration & creasing none of which impacts the very fine facial appearance or the key units [L4] [R26] and [R55-56], all units unmounted, Cat $37,500+, for the two No Monogram strips of 3, Cracked Electro through 'O' of 'ONE' (priced used only) and the other listed varieties (for mounted) plus 104 punctured 'OS' unmounted singles (Gibbons Cat £9000++, for 'OS' mounted singles x120). An exceptional survivor and probably the only complete Plate G punctured 'OS' sheet extant.
2d grey with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 5a (SG 3w), from the base of the sheet with the horizontal watermark line running through the value tablet, a couple of slightly uneven perfs, small hinge remainder, Cat $350 (£140).
2d grey with the Watermark Inverted ACSC 5a (SG 3w) marginal single from the left of the sheet, minor gum discolouration in the margin only, the stamp very fine unmounted, Cat $575 (£140 for mounted).
3d olive Watermark Inverted Die II/Die I horizontal pair ACSC 12Aa/c (SG 5b/dw/ew), lightly mounted, Cat $2850+ (£1150+) for Watermark Inverted singles or $2500+ (£1500+) for a 'normal' Die II/I pair. The ACSC prices a 'normal' Die II/I pair at a 40% premium over two singles; based on that a Watermark Inverted Die II/I pair would extrapolate to $3900. A scarce combination.
5d chestnut Plate 1 No Monogram strip of 3 with Upper Frame Damaged above 'S' of 'AUSTRALIA' ACSC 16(1)z, several short perfs at left, unused without gum, Cat $11,000 for mounted mint.
6d ultramarine ACSC 17A (SG 9) marginal block of 4 from the base of the sheet, a couple of very minor nibbled perfs, unmounted, Cat $3500+ (£340+ for mounted).
6d ultramarine Plate 1 with Mangled (Retouched!) Second 'E' of 'PENCE' ACSC 17(1)j (SG 9a), very well centred, a few nibbled perfs, Melbourne cds of 8JL13 well clear of the variety, Cat $2000 (£1000).
2/- brown Plate 2 'JBC' Monogram single ACSC 35(2)zc, reperforated & the monogram trimmed, Cat $25,000. Rare. [The ACSC indicates that only eight 'JBC' singles have been recorded]
£1 brown & blue ACSC 51A marginal example from the base of the sheet, a trifle aged, lightly mounted in the margin but the stamp is unmounted, Cat $17,500.
£1 brown & blue ACSC 51A (SG 15) marginal corner block of 4 from the U/R of the sheet, excellent colours and facial appearance, lightly hinged in the margins otherwise unmounted but with faint aging that is most evident in the side margin, Cat $70,000+ for singles (£12,000+ for mounted). A very rare multiple, especially of this quality. [Sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $32,345]
£2 black & rose-carmine ACSC 55A (SG 16) from the base of the sheet with horizontal marginal watermark line at the base, well centred, very lightly mounted, Cat $12,500 (£6500). A superb example of this iconic stamp, that is missing from most collections. BPA Certificate (2022).
£2 black & rose-carmine Sperati Forgery ACSC 55c, well-centred, very lightly mounted with almost full 'original gum', 'SPERATI/("55")/REPRODUCTION' handstamp on the reverse, Cat $17,500. The only Commonwealth of Australia stamp created by the greatest philatelic forger of them all, and one of the great rarities among forgeries of the British Empire.
The principal identifier of the forgery is the Scratch from Warrnambool past the Western Coast of Tasmania. In 'Sperati' by the British Philatelic Association (BPA), it is stated at page 31 that this flaw is constant on Pos [L50] of the issued stamps. This is confirmed by WH Holbeach at page 52 and page 160, and by the ACSC in footnote 2. However, the variety is not listed in the ACSC for the issued stamps.
The ACSC states that "the 'mint' is very rare, only two examples able to be traced". Neil Russell's example - part o.g., a few nibbled perfs at left & signed by Sperati on the reverse - sold at our auction of 27.2.2017 for $7320; the 'Artemis' example - no gum, a couple of missing perforations and a little aged - sold at our auction of 1.12.2021 for $5900. This is therefore a third example, of greater freshness, more vibrant colours and superior quality & appearance to either of the others.
