Lot No:342
Symbol:**

'FIVE/PENCE' on 4½d violet with 'FIVF' for 'FIVE' being the lower-right unit in a marginal block of 4 from the top of the sheet, characteristic irregular perfs & browned gum, minor blue-ink mark on the upper-left unit, a bit fragile, unmounted. Not listed in the ACSC. Ex 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr585. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2022) states "...believed due to foreign matter etc...the only such item known to me". However, under powerful magnification, it is clear that the 'break' does not have a straight edge, nor is it circular, which would be the case if it was obstructed by a paper fragment. Our assessment is that the 'F' was actually broken, making this a far more significant item. In either case, we believe it should be listed in the ACSC.
