Tom Torrans", dated March 17, 1819 from mother to daughter and sent from "Luana" to Kingston, Tom Torrans being the slave of a friend of the writer, with the letter including: "Mr. John Tomlinson's servant going to Town, my dear Mary, gives me an opportunity of forwarding a parcel with Indian Arrow Root which Mrs. Senior sent for you", another rare slave-carried letter. "Jamaica/Ship Letter" postmark on envelope originating from Colombia, sent from Santa Marta to Kingston, with involvement in its carriage of the "Chargé d'Affairs of the U.S." at Bogotá, endorsed "Care of U.S. Consul Mr. Harrison, Kingston" & "pr. J. H. Binton", handstruck on dispatch in red with "Santamarta/Debe" oval, framed "De Ultramar" and "6" centavos rate markings, neat two-line Jamaica/Ship Letter" handstamp and charged with "8" pence alongside, showing annotation on reverse "3 packages from the Department of State/6 parcels news papers/this letter" and Kingston double-arc datestamp on January 15, 1844, minor faults not detracting from this very interesting and most unusual mail. Great Britain #Z3, Z4, 1858-60 4d Rose and 6d lilac, both slightly centered to base, lightly cancelled by "A05" barred oval, the 4d, centrally cancelled, with short perforation at left and tiny tear at lower right, the 6d with couple of short perforations at top and barely noticeable soiling, still a scarce duo of very attractive appearance; the 4d is accompanied by 1983 B.P.A. certificate; ex-"Staircase" collection (S.G. £850). "Jamaica/Ship Letter" postmark on French franked mail from Cuba, sent from Santiago to Kingston, bearing France 1862 40c Orange tied by anchor lozenges and "jamaica/Ship Letter" on arrival, with matching "Cuba" octagonal datestamp (Salles 1364), marked with blue pencil for local postage on delivery at right, French framed "P.P." on front, arrival c.d.s. on back, despite faults a very scarce usage. United States #65, 1861 3c Rose, the adhesive with small faults, on envelope to New Jersey via Nassau, tied by "Steam/Ship" two-line handstamp, red crayon "4" pence due to the Bahamian authorities, later deleted, clear "Nassau/De 7 63/Paid" c.d.s. in red and blue notation "Due 2" denoting captain's fee, the envelope with tear at top caused through opening, an interesting and desirable outgoing Blockade-run cover by way of Nassau; 1972 P.F. certificate; ex-"Staircase" collection. S.G. #26, 1863-77 4d Rose, few perforation faults, tied by "A05" barred oval to September 12, 1865 envelope to Kingston, with "Bahamas/Sp 12 1865" double-arc datestamp on reverse, carried by the "Corsica" steamship to Havana -as no steamers bound to Jamaica-, then forwarded via St. Thomas with corresponding c.d.s. on back struck on October 13, arriving to destination on the 20th as confirmed by c.d.s. on front, then not being delivered with Italic "Unclaimed" handstamp, "Advertised" albino strike, finally struck by Kingston c.d.s. on March 31, 1866 and returned to Nassau after six months, "4" pence in red crayon probably applied on delivery, upper back flap missing, a very interesting and desirable usage; ex-Morris H. 1867 French Maritime Mail cover from Kingston to Bordeaux, franked by France 1862 80c Carmine, tied by anchor lozenge, with matching "Kingston/16 Juil 67/Paq. Fr. D No 1" octagonal datestamp, Salles 1543, and "Ligne-D/16 Juil 16/Paq. Fr. No 1" c.d.s. of this annexed maritime line, with inverted date and erroneous year, backstamps including "Ligne-B./23 Juil 67/Paq. Fr. No 3" and Bordeaux c.d.s.'s, very slight toning in few perforations, not detracting from this most probably unique combination of postmarks with a French franking; )Maury 24)In June 1865 the "Ligne D annexe" was inaugurated to provide service between St. Thomas and Kingston, being extended to Colon in 1868. It was trouble line which suffered navigational inconveniences and frequent epidemics, having a very limited postal and passenger traffic. (Image)
