THE UNIQUE EARLY USAGE OF THE G.B. 1d PINK POSTAL STATIONERY ENVELOPE IN JAMAICA; Extraordinary 6 Dec. 1843 usage of the G.B. 1d Pink Postal Stationery envelope (with interesting contents; corner stain clear of stamp and Kingston mark) from "Mount Pleasant" (an estate a few miles north of Kingston) to Sir Henry Fitzherbert in Derbyshire "P[er]. Packet" having a mainly very fine large "KINGSTON/JAMAICA" double-arc c.d.s. (8 Dec.) on the side-flap (displays beside address) with the embossed 1d Pink stamp uncancelled (the addressee's name crosses the lower part) with the correct "1/-" Packet Letter rate on the front and a London transit c.d.s. (9 Jan. 1844) across the flaps on the reverse. Clearly the sender - newly arrived from England - hoped that the 1d stamp would reduce the postage due in G.B. The contents refer to the 26 August Kingston Fire; "Kingston did not strike me as so much destroyed as I should have expected from the fire". Thought to be the only known example of a complete 1d Pink envelope Used in Jamaica and the earliest example of any G.B. Postage Stamp Used in Jamaica. Important Exhibition Item. [Ex Cavendish Fitzherbert auction, April 1989, lot 282; realised £428; also ex Cavendish Piat auCtion, 4 Dec. 2014, lot 3099; realised £550+BP.]Cross Reference: POSTAL STATIONERY, QV, G.B USED ABROAD STAMPS & COVERS (Image)
