Ionian Islands extensive primarily postal history exhibit collection of 232 covers/stationery items, about 140 off-cover stamps, six coins and eight paper currency notes, informatively written up on 194 exhibit pages in three binders, commences in earnest with the Venetian period, the earliest being a lettersheet and enclosure dating from 1661, an example of the famous forgery of the 1713-15 handstamp of Cephalonia, two 176Os disinfected folded letters to Venice, one from Cephalonia, the other Corfu, first bearing small "S" (11mm) for Sanita, the other large "S" (14mm), each bearing boxed "Lettere/Da Mare" handstamps and each the earliest known use of the "S," continues with the first French occupation 1797-1799, the Russian period 1799-1807 and the second French period 1807-1812 with 1812 "Order of the Day" letter to Corfu bearing red boxed "L'Ordteur dans les/Isles Ioniennes" handstamp, ex. J. Hess Barr, continues with possibly the largest section, the islands as a British Protectorate 1815-1864 showing a wide variety of handstamped town and "FRANCA" markings, fumigated letters, incoming and outgoing mail, including several from the Barr collection, also green crowned circle "Paid at Zante" on 1851 folded letter to Italy, crowned circle "Paid at Corfu" on 1844 folded letter to England and crowned circle "Paid at Cephalonia" on 1851 folded letter, next we have the issued stamps including a Perkins, Bacon die proof in black, mint o.g. blocks of four of each six used singles and a used block of four with conflicting expert opinions (certificates missing), and (1d) Blue on 1859 cover to Venice (not tied) and (2d) Carmine pen cancelled on cover to Corfu signed by D. Spanos, plus a fake (½d) cover, next come five covers from the postal transition period from 31 May 1864 to 2 January 1865 followed of course by an extensive array of covers and cancellations from the islands as part of Greece including numerous Hermes Heads covers including three with three color frankings a four color franking, usages with Austrian stamps, WWI period covers and cards including censored, British, French and Italian Field Post Offices, then two covers from the 1923 "Corfu Incident" and the overprinted Italian stamps, many air mail covers, WWII period including censored, Italian occupation with "Corfu," "Cephalonia," "Ithica" and "Zante" overprints and definitive issues on and off cover, the collection ends with 17 covers from the 1953 earthquakes, overall a comprehensive, impressive and fascinating collection which with a little work could easily achieve a Gold medal.
