The 'Scinde Dawk' were the first stamps issued anywhere in Asia. They were produced under the authority of Sir Bartle Frere of the East India Company, who in 1850 became Chief Commissioner of Sindh Province in north-west India (part of present-day Pakistan). The name derives from an anglicised spelling of "Dak", the Hindustani word for "Post".
