CAMPAIGN MAIL - FIRST MAHRATTA WAR; 1 May 1780 EL (separate outer - small tears - and letter) to London with "LONDON/SHIP LRE" hs on front and rated '2'(d) on front, contents datelined Bombay and written by a Matthew Murray I also informed you of the capture of Amudabad by General Goddard. He Received an addition to his force of one battalion of Europeans and one of Sepoys, besides artillery from Madras and although he has so fine an army under his command, he has not yet been able to do anything decisive against the Mahratta's who have been sent from Poona to oppose him. The cost of this expedition to the [East India] Company is enormous and whether ever we will have any advantages adequate to it is doubtful. Fine contemporary insight into the first (1775-82) campaign. Cross Reference: INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL, SHIP LETTERS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, MILITARY (Image)

'You will be glad to hear that a war was cooked up for me and a force collecting upon my arrival in India. On the 10th Dec, I took up my Command before Bhurtpore and after a siege of six weeks it fell....a most complete fall it has been to the Bhurtpore State....the natives imagined it impregnable..... Fine contemporary insight of this siege and success. Cross Reference: SHIP LETTERS, INCOMING OVERSEAS MAIL, MILITARY, FREE MAIL (Image)

SIKH WARS - BATTLE OF CHILLIANWALLAH; Remarkable June 1849 mourning env. to Windsor franked GB 1d red tied by indistinct London numeral and to a Mrs M.Will with contents, datelined at 'Camp Rajcote April 23rd 1849' from a J.M.Will; Lord Gough....has been up to his tricks again. His conduct on the banks of the Ishlum is proof of the extent to which foolhardiness and obstinacy may be carried and the long list of 93 officers who fell in action may be set down as something very little short of so many murders. The regiment was tried so severely as to have 29 officers and 800 men killed before they gave way. It was almost annihilated. Sir Charles Napier's appointment has give great satisfaction in this country. His name is quite enough to shake the confidence of the Sikhs....' Superb contemporary insight into Lord Gough's failures and his replacement by Sir Napier. Cross Reference: GREAT BRITAIN, MOURNING COVERS, MILITARY, MILITARY - GB FORCES OVERSEAS (Image)
