Hawaii, "ADVERTISED, Honolulu, H.I., Sep 1899", 46mm x 26mm oval datestamp (MH unrecorded, 1RRRR), clear strike in red on reverse of inbound July 12, 1899 cover from the United States bearing 5¢ dark blue (281) horizontal pair tied by cork cancel with "Mattapoisett, Mass. Jul 12 1899" cds, advertised to no avail and "Pas Reclamé./Unclaimed" handstamp in red (M-H 767) and "Dead Letter Office, Honolulu, H.I. Jan 19, 1900" oval in red (MH unrecorded, 1RR), sent to Washington D.C. where purple "Returned to Writer, D.L.O." handstamp and matching "Dead Letter Office, F.D. U.S., Feb 9, 1900" backstamp; Very Fine and remarkable usage, ex-Golden. Estimate $750 - 1,000. Gregory records only one other strike (December 1899) of this Honolulu advertised oval. It was unlisted by Meyer-Harris and the example offered here is only the second strike recorded. The Dead Letter Office oval is known used only from May 18, 1899 to May 31, 1900. $0 (Image)
