Hawaii, Honolulu Oahu, Feby 19, 1827, dateline on lengthy 3Ā½ page folded letter written by Levi Chamberlain to his niece Sarah Nichols in Boston regarding the news of her father's death, entered in mails in Boston with red "Ship 6" fancy arch in ribbon handstamp; some edge wear and splitting along outer folds, F.-V.F., a scarce early letter from Honolulu. EstimateĀ $500 - 750. Levi Chamberlain was an unmarried missionary member of the Second Company which sailed from New Haven, Connecticut, November 20, 1822, ship "Thames", Captain Clasby, and arrived at Honolulu, April 27, 1823, a voyage of 158 days. He was made Superintendent of Secular Affaires for the Mission. As a missionary teacher he made three early tours of Oahu afoot, kept a day school, and taught classes twice a week attended by teachers who wished to better qualify themselves in reading and writing. In spite of ill health, he worked tirelessly for the cause of the Mission and probably no man lived in the islands who was more generally respected and beloved. $0 (Image)
