Smith, soldier in the 1st Albany regiment stationed in Honolulu, with original covers, all but one cover (unfranked "Soldier's Letter" endorsed cover with U.S. dues) franked with 1894, 2¢ brown and addressed to wife in Albany, N.Y., with additional registered cover franked with single 1894, 12¢ blue; all lengthy letters accounting his time in Honolulu while awaiting his discharge, interesting content throughout regarding troop movements to Manila through Honolulu, inflated cost of goods, moving the regiment to the other side of Diamond Head (due to poor camp conditions and an outbreak of typhoid fever), the sudden and recent death of one of this comrades due to typhoid fever, having Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Ladies of Honolulu, etc., with last letter confirming his soon to discharge and return to the states; 3 covers with YMCA corner cards and matching letterhead enclosures, a Red Cross handstamped cover and many Catholic Truth Society (San Francisco Presidio) letterheads, some additional items including a photograph of Charles Smith in uniform (of which his mention several times trying to get taken before leaving Hawaii), Very Fine overall, a wonderful correspondence from soldier in Honolulu during the Spanish American war.
