Hawaii, 1871, 6¢ yellow green. Two singles tied by target cancels on double rate cover to Riverhead, N.Y., red rimless "Honolulu, H.I., Paid All, Apr, 4, 1878" cds and red San Francisco transit cds, with three detailed enclosures (first two giving latitude and longitude positions) from the whaling ship Barque Hunter, first letter of Jan 27, 1878 off of Deans Island described sperm whaling, the islands, trading with natives and making ready for Arctic whaling and walrusing, second letter of February describing leaving Deans Island towards Marqueas Islands and the tolls of a heavy storm, third letter datelined Karakakoa Bay, Owhyhee Island, March 16th, 1878 regarding meeting with the ship Dawn in the bay, getting the oil onto a schooner bound for Honolulu (most likely with this cover), being close to the point of land where Capt Cook was killer by natives, etc.; cover with edge wear, Fine, a wonderful and fascinating whaling letter.
