Hawaii, 1853, 5¢ blue, thick white paper. Ample to large margins, canceled by bold 7-bar circular grid cancel on cover to Westford Conn., red "Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, Oct. 13" cds, "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 20" transit cds with matching "Ship" and "12" due handstamps for unpaid domestic postage, with enclosure from a whaler, A. H. Storrs, datelined "Lahaina, Maui, H.I. Thursday Sept. 20/55" which mentions…The Reindeer is lying in this port and sails for home in a few days…; cover without one backflap, minor edge faults and faint age toning at right, F.-V.F., a rare use of the 1853, 5¢ Kamehameha III first printing on cover to the eastern United States with 12 cents due (trans-continental rate plus ship captain's fee), illustrated in Meyer-Harris, ex Harris, Krug, Rust, Honolulu Advertiser; with 1960 Friedl certificate.
