Hawaii, 1853, 13¢ Dark Red, Thick White Paper, margins large to just touching frameline at lower left, rich color, tied by red "Honolulu, U. S. Postage Paid, Dec 6" cds on cover to Athens, Tenn., in combination with U.S. 1851, 12¢ black, margins ample to just into outer frameline, tied by neat "San Francisco, Cal., Jan 5" cds, Very Fine; with 2016 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 6+U.S. 17  $32,500. A EARLY THIRD TREATY PERIOD MIXED FRANKING WITH HAWAIIAN 1853 13¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE OVERPAYING THE NEW 5¢ RATE AFTER THE APRIL 1855 RATE CHANGE. This letter was carried on the American brig "Agate", leaving Honolulu on the 10th of December and arriving in San Francisco on December 27, 1855. It was then sent for the east coast and postmarked on January 5th. $0 (Image)

Hawaii, 1853, 13¢ Dark Red, Thick White Paper, clear to large margins, tied by grid handstamp and red "Honolulu, U. S. Postage Paid, Jul 11" cds on fresh cover to Alexandria, Va., in combination with clear to large margin U.S. 1853, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair (small scissor separation cut between stamps at top) tied by "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 16" cds, Very Fine and choice; with 2016 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 6+U.S. 11A  $25,000. A REMARKABLE MIXED FRANKING COMBINATION OF THE HAWAIIAN 1853 13¢ KAMEHAMEHA III AND THE UNITED STATES 1853 3¢ ISSUES. This letter was carried by the American schooner "Restless", departing Honolulu on July 13th and arriving at San Francisco on August 9, 1854. A week later, the 3¢ pair was cancelled and sent on the mid-month sailing via Panama. It was then carried by the PMSC steamship "Oregon", departing San Francisco on August 16th and arriving at Panama City on August 30th after a stop at Acapulco. It was then carried by the "Empire City", departing Aspinwall on September 2nd and arriving at New York on September 12th. This cover is one of the very few examples with the U.S. stamps not applied over the Hawaiian postage. $0 (Image)
