Folded letter datelined "Carriacou 12th Augt., 1842" with manuscript "1/-" rating and bold strike of the rare straight line "Carriacou" handstamp with manuscript "Per Pkt, 13th Augt/42" endorsement below, reverse with red entry date stamp and "Oc 6, 1842" receiving date stamp; some cover edge wear, Very Fine, ex-Glassco, Towers, Jaffe and C. Freeland.
Estimate; $5,000 - 7,500.

THE FINEST STRIKE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE STRAIGHT LINE "CARRIACOU" HANDSTAMP - WITH ONLY FOUR EXAMPLES RECORDED.

This straight line postmark was originally a two-line handstamp reading "Carriacou, Ship Letter". This is the only British Colonial handstamp we know of of an original handstamp being altered with the bottom line removed. This cover sold in April 2006 realizing £4,878.
