Greece, Large Hermes Head Issue Collection, 1861-1900, comprehensive collection arranged on quadrille album pages in three albums; starting with a section of essays including the Barre French Ceres "Essai 1858" with "10" control number on reverse (control later used for the 10L Paris Print), other proofs including double impressions and printed on both sides, regular issues with modest to mostly moderate duplication */o the rule with a nice array of variety throughout, starting with 1861 Paris Print issues including 1L with two mint and six used singles including shade variety, 2L with mint multiple and singles in shades, 10L with "0" of "10" inverted on back (Sc 7c, cat $1,850) and without control (proof), 1861-62 Athens Print with selection of 1L issues including mint shades, 5L issue with several doubled control number variety, 10L with many 4-margin mint o.g. examples (Sc. 12, cat $600 each), 40L with mint o.g. (Sc. 14, cat $5,250) and over a dozen used examples, 1862-67 Issues with 1L with dozens of stamps including multiples, 2L with mint blocks including corner margin with control, 5L with a number of mint examples including plate variety, 10L including five examples of the "01" on back variety, 20L with plate variety and better control varieties including without control number (thins, Sc. 20f, cat $5,500), "80" on back (Sc. 20d, cat $2,450) and two examples of the double "20" on back (Scott 20e, cat $1,500 each), 80L with "8" inverted on back (Sc. 22b, cat $550), 1868 Issues with some better varieties including 40L "20" on back corrected to "40" (Sc. 28a, cat $2,750), 1870 issues with 20L "20" inverted on back (Sc. 31c, cat $675) and 20L "02" on back (Sc. 36, cat $600), 1872 Issue includes 10L with over a half dozen 10 inverted back varieties (two are rouletted) and several deep bright purple color varieties (unlisted in Scott, one with Holcombe cert.), 1875 Issue with a nice section of the 1L value with a host of shades, used strips of five and mint blocks of four, many showing plate flaw below head, 10L with various control varieties, 20L with two "2" invert on back (Sc. 47e, cat $3,000 each), 1880-82 Issues with a nice host of mint and used issues including multiples and shades, Athen 11½ unofficial perfs, 1900 surcharges with varieties including imperf between, also a section of forgeries; condition varies, a wonderful assembly of these first Greece issues.
