Interesting collection with some attractive Line Engraved issues & Numbered Maltese Crosses '1' to '12' ('9' is light, '10' is poor, '11' is smudged, plus a cover with '3' x2 that may not belong), Surface Printed oddments including a very fine pair of the 8d orange, KEVII unused set to 1/- plus a mint Pound (aged gum), KGV Typo & Photogravure mint sets (minor aging but **), later high value used multiples including KGVI 10/- ultramarine block of 6, a page of Officials including Parcels 1/- orange-brown, etc, also Revenues including 1812 & 1813 newspapers with impressed 3½d in red, and QV range with huge Life Policy imperfs x5 to 5/-, Chancery Court x6 to 14/-, several for use in Ireland, etc, condition rather mixed so inspection is recommended.

1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 Plate 4 corner letters [TK], margins close at lower-right to large at top & right, large-part original gum, Cat £12,500.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 Plate 6 corner letters [PK], margins a little cut-into at left to large at right & base with a tiny portion of the adjoining unit at lower-right, unused (no gum), Cat £12,500.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 corner letters [SD] stated to be from Plate 1a, margins close to just touching in places, tied by two strikes of Maltese Cross cancel in red to Mulready 1d Letter Sheet to Pembroke with London cds of 'MY-7/1840' on back flap being the Second Day of Issue of both the Penny Black stamps and the Mulready stationery, small-part red wax seal renmants (hiding the Stereo number), minor edge wear/faults at the corners & light overall aging, SG Specialised Cat £15,000+ for use on a Mulready letter sheet plus a substantial premium for the early usage (a non-uprated Mulready lettersheet used on 7.5.1840 is priced at 4-times the normal used price). The rate was 1d per ½oz, the additional 1d paying for an item weighing over ½oz up to 1oz.

1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [LF] stated to be from Plate 4, margins good to large, tied to piece by very fine Maltese Cross cancel in black with 'T.P./Cornhill' handstamp in red alongside, Cat £425+.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [OD] stated to be from Plate 6, margins close at base to large with fragments of two adjoining units at top & lower-right, light Maltese Cross cancel in red, Cat £400.
1840 Penny Black 1d black on Bleuté Paper SG Spec 2a [DA] stated to be from Plate 6, margins good to close at lower-right, light but indistinct Maltese Cross cancel in black, SG Specialised Cat £775.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [QH] stated to be from Plate 9, margins close to large at right & base, tied to piece by neat Maltese Cross cancel in black with 'Hursley/Penny Post' handstamp in black alongside, Cat £625.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 horizontal pair [EG-EH] stated to be from Plate 9 with Original Re-Entry on the [EH] unit, margins close to just touching at top & good to large at left, neat Maltese Cross cancels in black, SG Specialised Cat £1800+ for the pair.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [CC] from Plate 10 with Flaw on 'O' of 'ONE' (State 3), margins just touching at upper-right to good, light Maltese Cross cancel in black, Cat £950. State 3 of the 'O' Flaw is found only on the upper four rows of Plate 10 (see also next Lot).
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [BF] stated to be from Plate 10 without the 'O' Flaw, margins good to just close at lower-right, light Maltese Cross cancel in red, SG Specialised Cat £1500 for the red cancel plus a premium for being one of only six positions (of 240) without the 'O' Flaw.
1840 Penny Black 1d black SG 2 [RG] from Plate 10 with Long-Tailed 'R' (Converted from 'P' by Hand) & Flaw on 'O' of 'ONE' (State 2), margins close to good at base, on small piece with light indistinct Maltese Cross cancel in black, SG Specialised Cat £1100. The 'Long-Tailed R' is found only on the eighteenth row of Plate 10.
1840 Penny Black 1d grey-black (worn plate) SG 3 [CC] stated to be from Plate 1a, margins good to close at lower-right, light Maltese Cross cancel in red, SG Specialised Cat £525. Very attractive. The illustration is above Lot 1320.
1840 Penny Black 1d grey-black (worn plates) SG 3 Plate 4 corner letters [IL], margins good to large, affixed to large piece but apparently uncancelled, very fine 'Pierce Bridge/Penny Post' cursive script handstamp alongside and 'DARLINGTON/NO11/1840' cds in blue arrival (?) partly over red wax seal remnants, light horizontal fold clear of the stamp & markings, Cat £16,500 for unused.
1840 Penny Black complete sheet reconstruction [AA-TL] most appear to be Black SG 2 but noted a few Grey-Black (worn plate) SG 3, each identified by Plate Number above the stamps and stated to comprise Plate 1a x16 including [ED] on Bleuté Paper & [QA] with Double 'Q', Plate 1b x18 including [IL] with Re-Cut Letters and wide margin at right (creased), Plate 2 x10 including two horizontal pairs [JK-JL] & [QF-QG], Plate 3 x20, Plate 4 x36 including [HA] with wide margin at left & [TL] on Bleuté Paper, Plate 5 x24, Plate 6 x36, Plate 7 x11, Plate 8 x25, Plate 9 x3, Plate 10 x39 including [EI] with Tall 'I', [MG-MH] horizontal pair and [OJ] with Double 'J' and Plate 11 x2 [CL] & [RH] the first touching on all sides, the other with margins close to touching on three sides. It appears that the majority are fine to very fine examples with full margins and all with Maltese Cross cancels in either red or black, Cat £135,000+ as identified. A remarkable achievement.
